One foot in front of the other!

By Lisa Jane

This morning I set out for a run aiming to do 10km (average these days is 8km, so thought I’d push it a bit!). As I do out and back runs, I thought I’d go through to the 6km mark before the turn around so that I would finish up in the vicinity of the café and enjoy a well-earned coffee at the end of the run (especially since we ran out of gas last night, so no hot water for a cuppa til I get the bottles filled!)

I maintained a nice steady pace throughout the run (wasn’t pushing for time today), but at the end of the 8th kilometre, I was feeling it. Thoughts of finishing up at the 9km mark instead of the 10 did cross my mind, but I figured that if I could do one more kilometre, then surely I could manage two!

So, coaching myself, I told myself to just keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward! It occurred to me as I had this thought, this is really what any journey on the way to achieving your goals is all about – putting one foot in front of the other and keeping on the right path. Don’t be tempted by those easier looking side tracks – sure, there may not be a hill on that little detour, but what about that deep gully that takes twice as much effort to get out of?

The 9th kilometre drew to a close (still going well at maintaining my pace) and I could see the milestone of the 10km mark! I decided that it was not the finish line, but rather a place to catch my breath, take stock and prepare for the next challenge as there will always be another run, another journey! I also ran past a couple of guys sitting in their car rocking to some beats and others out walking that were doing it tough and suddenly, the last kilometre didn’t seem that bad at all!

So as I neared the spot that I thought the 10km milestone was, I took my iphone off my arm and flicked to my running app to see where I was (I only wear a watch running if I am pushing for a time challenge). Imagine my surprise when it was telling me that I was at 10.91km! I’d missed one of my kilometre reminders (don’t wear earphones, so only faintly hear them). I kept on for the next 100m to tick over to 11km. Sometimes, we just don’t give ourselves enough credit for how much we can achieve!

Whatever your goals, just take that path and put one foot in front of the other!

  • Thanks Lisa, that has motivated me to the next step. I am not an exercise person, but I do try and get my motivation from others who are trying to better themselves… I actually managed to do quite a bit of exercise today, and I felt good afterwards…
